Posted: Friday, April 19, 2024. 10:37 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the United States deported 50 Haitians to Haiti amidst the ongoing crisis fueled by gang violence.

Haiti continues to struggle with gang violence.

The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Homeland Security Department said in a statement that it “will continue to enforce U.S. laws and policy throughout the Florida Straits and and the Caribbean region, as well as at the southwest border. U.S. policy is to return noncitizens who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States.”

Data from the U.N.s International Organization for Migration indicate that over 33,000 people fled Haiti’s capital in a span of 2 weeks as gangs continue to take over territory.

Haiti’s National Police is understaffed and overwhelmed by gangs with powerful arsenals.

Many hospitals ceased operations amid a shortage of medical supplies.
