BEL says unplanned power outage caused by bushfire

Posted: Sunday, April 21, 2024. 5:21 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: This morning, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) informed its customers that the recent unplanned outage was caused by a bush fire.

There was a series of outages between 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday morning across the mainland Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts.

BEL stated, “Despite our proactive measures to ensure the stability and reliability of our services, the unpredictable nature of natural disasters can sometimes lead to unforeseen disruptions. Our team is actively working to restore full functionality as quickly as possible, prioritizing the safety of both our infrastructure and personnel.”

This is on the heels of an unplanned outage on Thursday, all as the company makes upgrades to its gas turbines at Mile 8, George Price Highway, Belize District, while mitigating issues with the CFE power supply.
