Premier League of Belize completes closing season as semifinalists eye Central American Cup

By Aaron Humes: Four games closed the second half of the Premier League of Belize (PLB)’s regular season for 2023-2024 this afternoon.

Verdes FC, Benque United, Port Loyola of Belize City, and Altitude of Independence were the confirmed semifinalists, but positions two to four were still all to play for between the latter three. Benque came into week 14 in second position, leading Port Loyola and opening season champions Altitude in that order.

Altitude beat southern rivals Wagiya of Dangriga 2-1 to secure second place behind Verdes with 29 points. The Green Machine beat Benque 1-0 to knock them down to fourth place, ensuring they will meet again in the semifinal round.

Port Loyola finished third ahead of Benque United on goal differential following a 5-1 crushing of Belmopan Bandits at Marion Jones Stadium in the Old Capital. Port Loyola’s Latrell Middleton has been confirmed as the Golden Boot winner for the closing season with 16 goals.

In the lone dead rubber, Progresso FC of Corozal knocked out Police Benque at Marshalleck Stadium by 3-0.

With Altitude winning the opening season, Verdes must secure a closing season title to put them in the catbird seat for a return to the Central American Cup club championship. Currently, Verdes has 66 points across both seasons, ahead of Port Loyola on 53 and Altitude on 52.
