Posted: Wednesday, April 24, 2024. 11:24 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Police Department’s Professional Standards Branch is reportedly investigating a sergeant who is accused of extorting 3 people in San Ignacio.

The sergeant reportedly used the new seatbelt regulation to extort the residents.

The person said that he was traveling from Cristo Rey village to San Ignacio when he was stopped by a police mobile.

The sergeant informed the driver and occupants that they had been stopped for not wearing a seatbelt and would need to pay a fine of $200 per person in the vehicle.

The driver allegedly told the officer that he doesn’t have the money and why he wasn’t issued a ticket.

To which, the officer said that they are no longer issuing tickets and are now charging fines.

The driver gave the officer $100 and was told that he would pay the rest at treasury.

Reports indicate that there are 2 more complaints of a similar situation.
