By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the case against Ecuador began at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) after Ecuador’s April 5th raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
Armed authorities raided the Mexican Embassy and detained Former vice president Jorge Glas who had been seeking asylum in Mexico.
Since then, Mexico cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador and evacuated its staff.
Mexico alleges that Ecuador violated the Vienna Convention and seeks Ecuador’s suspension from the UN.
Ecuador, in turn, accuses Mexico of violating international obligations by granting asylum to the former vice president.
The diplomatic spat has led to severed ties with Ecuador by several Latin American nations and garnered support for Mexico.
The standoff centers around the former vice president, who sought asylum in Mexico, claiming political persecution amid corruption charges.
