Belize Agricultural Health Authority announces strict enforcement measures for sale of contraband citrus

Posted: Friday, May 3, 2024. 3:58 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) informed that the importation of citrus as fresh fruit is currently not admissible, except for Tahiti limes from Mexico for processing.

BAHA says that it continues to conduct surveillance to detect and deter illegal importations and distribution of regulated agricultural commodities, including citrus.

“We remind all individuals and business establishments that possession of such commodities is a violation of the BAHA Act and will be met with strict enforcement of penalties as prescribed under BAHA’s regulation, SI No. 34 of 2022,” BAHA said.

The public is also reminded to apply for an import permit from BAHA prior to the importation of products regulated by the Authority.

“Your cooperation and adherence to our regulations are essential for preserving the integrity of our health status and ensuring food security,” BAHA urged.
