By Aaron Humes: A Belize City fisherman accused of assaulting a Sergeant of Police is out on bail after he was arraigned for the offense of aggravated assault.

Denmar DeShawn Davis Jr., 22, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after a night in lockdown to answer to a single charge of aggravated assault on April 30.

Davis told the court that police came to his house to detain someone else and that’s when they allegedly hit him in the mouth; he insisted, “I neva assault anyone.”

Then Davies Jr., said, “I wah plea guilty because I nuh have no one to come bail me.”

But the Magistrate could not accept his guilty plea and so he was offered bail of $500 plus one surety of the same amount which he was unable to meet up until this evening.

Davies Jr. will be remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can meet bail; his next court date is set for June 26.
