National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network Secretariat and Government of Belize sign MOU to increase Climate Change Adaptation efforts

The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network Secretariat, hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), is providing long-term technical assistance through its in-country NAP support program. Through this program, the network is assisting the Government of Belize in transitioning from planning to implementing its country’s NAP for the coastal zone and fisheries sector. This program is being implemented under an agreement signed by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and IISD. Belize is one of the countries approved by the BMZ for NAP Global Network support.

“NAP Global Network is pleased to support the Government of Belize in advancing its NAP processes. This cooperation agreement will enhance the governance structure and resiliency of the coastal zone area and fisheries sector, particularly in addressing medium and long-term climate change impacts and climate change adaptation,” said Orville Grey, Head of the Secretariat for the NAP Global Network.

This MoU aims to extend collaboration between the parties to support the Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management in enhancing the coastal zone and fisheries sector through capacity building, vulnerability and livelihood assessment, and communication, empowering the coastal zone and fishing communities to advance NAP implementation. 

Under this MoU, the parties will carry out collaborative activities related to climate change adaptation, including:

1. a) Educating and raising awareness among national, sub-national stakeholders, and coastal communities about climate change effects, ongoing national adaptation planning efforts, and potential opportunities for climate change resilience in Belize.
2. b) Utilizing reliable local and scientific knowledge to preserve and sustainably use coastal and marine ecological resources, ensuring continued livelihood and economic well-being of those dependent on these resources.
3. c) Developing national decision-support systems to facilitate and support the implementation of the NAP for the coastal zone and fisheries sector.

As a result, the Government of Belize, represented by the Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment welcomes this partnership with NAP Global Network.
