Belize to purchase more electricity from Mexico; export more livestock, sugar

Posted: Monday, May 13, 2024. 1:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño says Mexico will make up for recent issues with power supply by supplying more power through a second line.

The P.M. was in Mexico over the weekend concluding agreements with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on various issues, including carving out space to export sugar and more cattle directly to Mexico.

In the case of the former, issues with contraband have produced shortages, but Belize will be able to obtain direct revenue from sales pending the reduction of tariffs.

The P.M. also mentioned opportunities for the development of the now-Government-owned Port of Belize Limited with Chetumal becoming a duty-free area.
