By Aaron Humes: The alleged whistle-blower in the abetment to murder case against convicted attorney Oscar Selgado is now himself behind bars.
30-year-old Giovanni Martinez, a resident of Seine Bight Village, Stann Creek District, is accused by police of being a member of the gang Backaland Crips which is engaged in committing serious offenses.
Ramirez pleaded not guilty to the charge. He claimed to the sitting Magistrate that he was in dealings with a police officer over a vehicle and suspected that is why he was targeted.
Due to the nature of the alleged offense, Ramirez was denied bail, and he was informed that he could apply for bail at the High Court with the assistance of an attorney. Ramirez was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 24.
Ramirez’s cooperation with authorities led to the conviction of Selgado for the alleged solicitation of the murder of a former client.
While Ramirez himself never showed up in court to testify against Selgado as he claimed to fear for his life, his police statement was admitted into evidence in the trial against Selgado.
