Belize Electricity Limited schedules blackouts today, Wednesday for maintenance as well as due to CFE-related cuts

Posted: Tuesday, May 14, 2024. 8:46 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Various portions of the country of Belize will be out of power between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, as well as Wednesday, as Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has once again announced exigent circumstances related to Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) of Mexico.

BEL reports that CFE is carrying out transmission line upgrade works to facilitate the Tren Maya Project in Quintana Roo. It will be necessary to completely disconnect supply as opposed to cutting Belize’s take to zero; in the latter case, it supplies what is known as “spinning reserve” or make-up for fluctuations in demand or output capacity from other generating units which would allow BEL to run all local generating units at full capacity.

However, BEL prefers to avoid a total system collapse if there is no backup from CFE and all local generating units are running full power or if there is a sudden spike in demand. BEL will keep output of the Westlake Gas Turbine at 21 megawatts and reserve a further nine.

BEL explains that total generation capacity stands at 116 megawatts plus the reserve nine, against between 115 and 127 megawatts of demand countrywide on both days. The interruptions will maintain grid stability and allow for urgent maintenance works on affected feeders.
