Guatemalan man charged for stealing wife’s cellphone

Posted: Tuesday, May 14, 2024. 7:11 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Hugo Raul Sylvestre Jimenez, a 43-year-old Guatemalan man seeking residency in Belize, found himself in court today after his wife accused him of stealing her cell phone. Appearing unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, Jimenez faced a single charge of theft.

Allegations are that on May 13, 2024, in the Lords Bank area, Jimenez allegedly stole his wife’s white Stylus 5 cellphone, valued at $360. While Jimenez initially pleaded guilty with an explanation, his defense led to the rejection of his guilty plea, and an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.

Jimenez explained to the court that his wife had given him permission to use the phone to listen to music, but he claimed to have lost it while intoxicated. He asserted that his wife only desired reimbursement for the lost phone.

Bail was granted to Jimenez without objection, set at $600 plus one surety of the same amount. He is scheduled to appear back in court on June 28, 2024.

According to the police report, Jimenez’s wife reported the incident after discovering her cellphone missing upon returning home from work. She alleged that Jimenez had previously stolen items from her, prompting her to seek legal action.
