By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: According to a recent poll, Claudia Sheinbaum, the former Mayor of Mexico City and candidate for the ruling party, maintains a solid lead over her nearest competitor as Mexico’s elections loom closer.
The poll, conducted by consulting firm Mitofsky for El Economista newspaper, indicates that Sheinbaum, a key ally of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and running under the banner of his leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, commands nearly 49% of the prospective vote.
Her closest contender, Xochitl Galvez, representing a coalition of opposition parties including the center-right National Action Party (PAN), the centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the center-left Democratic Revolution (PRD), trails behind with approximately 28% of the anticipated vote.
This marks a slight narrowing of Sheinbaum’s lead compared to the previous poll in April, where she held 51.4% against Galvez’s 26.7%.
However, a notable portion of respondents, totaling 12.7% in the poll, either expressed indecision or stated they would abstain from voting in the June 2 Presidential election.
