Police inspector charged with beating detainee with padlock in holding cell asks for sentencing indication

Posted: Tuesday, May 14, 2024. 7:03 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Inspector Christopher Martinez, of the Special Patrol Unit, has requested a sentencing indication in his case where he stands accused of wounding Aaron Flowers, a Belize City businessman. Martinez, who remains on active duty pending the outcome of his trial, faces allegations of beating Flowers while he was detained in a holding cell.

The incident dates back to June 19, 2023, when Martinez allegedly used a padlock from the cell area to inflict head injuries on Flowers, resulting in a wounding charge. Despite initially pleading not guilty, Martinez surprised the court by seeking a sentencing indication during today’s proceedings, prompting an adjournment until May 23, 2024.

In court today, discussions revolved around the possible sentence Martinez could face if he pleads guilty, with attention given to the injuries sustained by Flowers and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The prosecution emphasized their pursuit of a just sentence, indicating that Martinez’s acceptance of responsibility could influence the outcome.

Evidence includes video footage showing Martinez removing the padlock and interacting with Flowers, bolstering the case against him. Flowers, present in court with his wife, expressed a desire for justice and seeks compensation for medical expenses and distress caused by the incident.

Martinez’s attorney noted the significance of the upcoming sentencing, which could impact his client’s future as a police officer. Notably, both Flowers and Martinez faced criminal charges initially, but the charge against Flowers was later withdrawn. Martinez’s fate will be determined on May 23, 2024, following the Chief Magistrate’s indication of the potential penalty he may face.
