By Horace Palacio: Belize is currently in the grip of a persistent heatwave, with temperatures soaring to uncomfortable levels, especially in inland regions. The Belize National Meteorological Service has issued a heat alert, warning residents to take precautions as the mercury climbs.

Today’s forecast promises mostly sunny skies with hazy conditions, but the warmth along the coast is expected to intensify inland, reaching potentially dangerous levels. Despite the clear skies, no rainfall is anticipated, further exacerbating the dry conditions.

The heatwave is not only affecting land temperatures. Coastal areas are experiencing warm conditions, with highs of 91°F (33°C), while inland temperatures are predicted to hit a scorching 100°F (38°C). Even in the typically cooler hills, residents can expect temperatures to reach 84°F (29°C).

The marine forecast indicates moderate sea conditions with winds blowing from the east-southeast at 10-20 knots. Waves are expected to reach 4-6 feet, creating potentially choppy waters for those venturing out to sea.

The heat alert issued by the meteorological service emphasizes the need for residents, particularly those inland, to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. The outlook suggests that these conditions will persist through Thursday and Thursday night, highlighting the need for continued vigilance.

Overall, the weather in Belize continues to be a cause for concern, with the ongoing heatwave posing potential health risks. As the country contends with these extreme conditions, residents are reminded to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool.
