By Horace Palacio: Belize is grappling with a persistent heatwave and smoky conditions, as temperatures soar and wildfires continue to rage in the region.
The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued a Heat Alert, warning of dangerously high temperatures, particularly inland, where the mercury is expected to reach 102°F (39°C). Coastal and hilly areas will experience slightly cooler temperatures, but the heatwave’s impact will be felt across the country.
The scorching heat has prompted health officials to urge residents to take precautions, especially those living inland. Staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, and seeking shade are crucial to preventing heat-related illnesses.
Adding to the discomfort, a smoky haze hangs over Belize, caused by ongoing wildfires. The smoke can pose significant health risks, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions. Authorities are advising residents to monitor air quality reports and take necessary protective measures.
The forecast for the next 24 hours offers little respite, with sunny skies and no rain expected. Winds blowing from the east-southeast at 10-20 knots will contribute to moderate sea conditions, with waves reaching 4-6 feet.
The outlook for Friday and Friday night indicates that the heatwave and smoky conditions will persist, with no immediate relief in sight.
Belizeans are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and heed the advice of health officials to protect themselves from the adverse effects of extreme heat and smoke.
