Posted: Thursday, May 16, 2024. 10:23 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Louis Gillett, convicted of the 2003 murder of businessman Alvin Godfrey, has been sentenced to 29 years and 2 months in prison before being eligible for parole. Godfrey, shot in the face during a robbery at his Kings Park shop, succumbed to his injuries on June 5, 2023.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim, who determined the sentence, noted Gillett’s minimal rehabilitation efforts during his 20 years in prison. Gillett was urged to participate in more programs to improve his chances for parole.

The crime was described as brutal, with aggravating factors including the use of a firearm, the attack on Godfrey’s face, and the underlying robbery motive. The victim’s family continues to suffer from the impact of the crime, as highlighted in a statement from Godfrey’s son, Gregory.
