By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has raised issue with an alleged proposal by the Government, which it says will affect public officers’ gratuity payments after retirement.
According to a statement from the UDP on Friday, concerned teachers and public officers have reached out sharing a proposal in which they would only collect 50 percent of their gratuity upon retirement and would receive the other 50 percent at a later time. The UDP says this doesn’t bode well for public officers at the end of their tenure, noting that many people depend on their gratuity for their post-retirement plans.
It also noted that many public officers aren’t guaranteed a long life after retirement. “If we can find hundreds of millions in a day to settle uncollectible debts, we can find the funds needed annually to do right by public servants,” the UDP said.
The UDP also raised issue with a requirement for teachers to have Continuous Professional Development of at least 120 hours to renew their licenses. The UDP is calling for government to provide free workshops to teachers and to have school administrators submit CPD credited workshop hours for their staff in order to accurately reflect teachers’ training hours.
