Port Loyola FC makes apologies for damage caused by celebration at stadium

By Aaron Humes: Newly-crowned Premier League of Belize champions Port Loyola FC have had to apologize after visiting fans caused damage to the chain link fence at the venerable Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, home of opponents Verdes FC.

Following their score that would ultimately end the game 1-0, excited fans were seen hanging on to the fence behind the team’s bench. The club’s statement said that “This act of over-celebration, while born out of excitement, was reckless and not representative of the beautiful game we play, nor of Port Loyola FC, our wider fan base, or the people of Belize City.”

The club said it took full responsibility, remarking that actions that would lead to damage to property or any compromise in fan safety would not be condoned.

The team will commit to covering expenses for repair of the damaged fence and issues thanks for the hospitality of the hosts.

Port Loyola FC will now celebrate – perhaps more cautiously – the City’s first ever Premier League title and first football title of any kind in several decades, while preparing for a CONCACAF Champions League adventure.
