Posted: Wednesday, May 22, 2024. 5:50 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A resident of Calla Creek, Cayo District, perished on Tuesday afternoon after going to swim alone in the Mopan River which runs behind her residence in the village.

According to police, 20-year-old Kayla Hernandez left around 2 p.m. About 45 minutes later, her aunt Lilian Hernandez followed behind. Upon arriving at the river bank, she saw Kayla Hernandez face up at the bottom of the river, apparently motionless. The river is clear and was about 3 feet in depth in that area.

Lilian Hernandez retrieved her niece and immediately noticed she was unresponsive. Kayla was rushed to the San Ignacio Community Hospital.

After being pronounced no injuries were seen on the body. The body is at the San Ignacio Community Hospital awaiting a post-mortem examination.
