Belize Audubon Society: Forest Fires contained at Guanacaste National Park

Posted: Thursday, May 23, 2024. 2:24 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) informed that the forest fires inside the Guanacaste National Park have been contained.

On Wednesday, the blaze began prompting an extensive response from park rangers and firefighting teams.

Guanacaste National Park, managed by the Belize Audubon Society, is one of the most accessible protected areas in the country, located less than two miles from Belmopan at the intersection of the Hummingbird and George Price Highways.

The park, which provides recreational and educational opportunities and preserves the local riparian forest, faced significant threats from the fires.

The first blaze was reported on the Living Cycle Trail, with footage capturing the intensity of the flames. Rangers, assisted by two fire trucks, worked until around 11 p.m. to contain the flames.

“The team worked tirelessly to manage the situation,” said Shane Young, Protected Areas Director of the Belize Audubon Society.

“We have successfully contained the fire near the visitor center and are now focusing on the blaze on the Guanacaste Trail,” Young added.

The BAS noted that all fires were extinguished by the fire fighters and ranger team.

“The park’s riparian forest plays a crucial role in protecting major water tributaries flowing from the west to the Caribbean Sea, adding urgency to the containment efforts,” BAS added.

Buses continue to stop right outside the park, which remains a vital site for promoting understanding and appreciation of nature and the environment.
