By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico is gearing up for its Presidential elections on June 2, 2024.

Today, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai expressed gratitude to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for his support during his tenure in office.

“As the Mexican people prepare to go to the poles, our Prime Minister and Ministers of Cabinet continue expanding the relationship with the Mexican Government and its agencies.

President Obrador’s government has been extremely helpful with Belize’s agriculture export to Mexico.

We have done well with cattle export to Mexico… duty free. And we are likely to get an extension for continued duty free. Conversation has started,” Mai stated.

In addition, Mai noted that shrimp has been placed on SENASICA’s network for Belize to export to Mexico.

“Belize’s shrimp production will increase in the second half of 2024. Note Belize was removed from the network in 2014.

We are preparing to export coconuts with similar status in various forms of presentation. A great part of our coconut plantains will start lite harvesting next year.

Soybean oil is exported to Mexico and may intensify shortly when the oil refinery in Spanish Lookout is commissioned,” Mai added.

Mai also explained that there is also a possibility of exporting sugar to Mexico, in a managed quantity with similar status of cattle.

“The conversation has started. This can result in greater gains to the industry stakeholders as local handling cost and ocean freight or over land freight will be far less.

And there is a high possibility that we will have an extension of Sembrando Vida Project,” Mai expressed.

The Minister of Agriculture thanked President AMLO and his government for such support.

Minister Mai also thanked  Prime Minister John Briceño for his wise leadership in steering Belize in the right direction.
