La Niña to fuel active hurricane season as first tropical wave forms in Atlantic

Posted: Sunday, May 26, 2024. 6:26 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season is showing early signs of activity, as the National Hurricane Center (NHC) analyzes the first tropical wave of the season. Satellite imagery captured this wave moving across the Central Atlantic, southwest of the Cape Verde islands. While disorganized at present, this disturbance could be the first of many to form in what is forecast to be a busy season.

While Belize currently enjoys calm weather, it’s crucial to remember that the hurricane season officially begins on June 1st. Pre-season forecasts suggest 2024 could be another active year for hurricanes, a stark contrast to the relatively quiet 2023 season. The first named storm usually forms around mid-to-late June, with the first hurricane typically developing by August.

The shift from the El Niño pattern of 2023 to a La Niña pattern in 2024 is a key factor in this forecast. La Niña tends to create conditions more favorable for hurricane formation in the Atlantic basin.

Belizeans are urged to take this early activity as a reminder to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. This includes reviewing emergency plans, stocking up on supplies, and staying informed about weather updates.

While there is no immediate threat to Belize, the National Meteorological Service of Belize will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed. Remember, preparedness is key to staying safe during hurricane season.
