By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Earlier this morning, the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) urged residents in San Pedro Ambergris Caye to reduce energy consumption.

“We urgently need the assistance of all our Customers in San Pedro to immediately reduce energy consumption to lower the loading on the mobile substation transformer. If the overloading persists, BEL will have to carry out emergency load shedding of certain areas of San Pedro to protect the mobile substation from damage,” BEL noted.

Shortly after, there was an emergency power outage in San Pedro.

BEL noted that a portion of Feeder #2 was taken offline to reduce the load on the Maskall transformer supplying San Pedro.

Areas affected: Portion San Pedro Town which includes San Pedrito, DFC Area, Escalante Subdivision and portion Mahogany Bay : Pescador Drive from Pupuseria Salvadoreña to Tarpon Street, Almond Street from Black Coral to Tarpon Street, Black Coral Street from Pescador Drive to the Water Taxi, Tarpon Street between Barrier Reef Drive and beach side near Neri’s Tacos, Coconut Drive between Esmeralda and Tarpon Streets, Esmeralda Street, Water Lane, Glitter Street, Tropic Wave Street, Lion Street, Crocodile Street, Jade Street, Sea Grape Drive from Island City Supermarket to Stingray Street, Marina Drive, Stingray Street east of Sea Grape Drive, Mullet Street, Fire Coral Street, Stadium Street, Pearl Street, Rosewood Street, Flamboyant Street, Ciricote Street and Escalante Drive.

BEL is asking customers to assist by immediately taking off all lights and electrical devices not in use.

BEL said that power will only be restored to the area as soon as the demand for energy in San Pedro is reduced.
