Weather experts monitor three tropical waves in Atlantic amidst forecasts of active hurricane season

Posted: Friday, June 7, 2024. 10:49 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Weather experts at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are currently monitoring 3 tropical waves crossing the Atlantic and Caribbean waters.

While there is no threat to Belize, officials in Belize are boosting hurricane preparedness efforts.

Forecasters predict an active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season with between 17 and 25 named storms, of which between eight and 13 may escalate into hurricanes, with between four and seven systems potentially reaching major hurricane status – Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale and above.

Experts say that the forecast is attributed to La Niña conditions and the unprecedented warmth pervading oceanic waters.

Belize’s National Meteorological Service is urging all residents to be prepared and have their hurricane preparedness plans.

Emergency Supplies: Procurement of water, non-perishable sustenance, first-aid provisions, batteries, and other indispensable essentials.

Evacuation Routes: Familiarization with evacuation avenues and identification of designated shelters.

Communication Protocols: Establishment of robust communication channels with kin and acquaintances to mitigate disconnection during inclement weather.

Insurance Evaluation: Diligent review of insurance coverage to ascertain adequacy for safeguarding property and assets.

The Government of Belize is also actively preparing for the hurricane season, with emergency response teams on standby and public awareness campaigns underway.
