Nicaragua blast Belize 4-0 in FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at FFB Stadium in Belmopan

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize started off the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers on a bad foot taking a 4-0 trouncing by Nicaragua at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday evening.

Belize held off the Nicaraguans for39 minutes but conceded the first goal in the 40th minute when Bancy Hernández placed the ball past Charles Tillett.  Juan Barrera augmented the Pinoleros lead in the 56th with a penalty kick after a foul on Hernández who completed his brace in the 65th for the 3-0 lead. Jaime Moreno put the last nail in the coffin in the 89th off a penalty kick by Jaime Moreno who fired to the right beyond Tillett’s reach for the final 4-0 victory.

Certainly not the start Belize were looking forward to Group D and will now be travelling to Barbados to face the South American side on Tuesday, June 11. The match will kick off at 4:00 pm Belize time (6:00 pm Guyana time) at the Wildey Astro Turf Stadium in Bridgetown.

Nicaragua now lead Group D with six points after previously beating Montserrat 4-1 Wednesday in Managua.

Panama hold second place with three points after their 2-0 win over Guyana 2-0 on Thursday in Panama City.

For the moment, Guyana, Monserrat, and Belize follow in third, fourth, and fifth places respectively.

The next game will see Montserrat host Panama on Sunday ahead of Belize’s away match to Guyana on Tuesday.

After that game, the Concacaf Qualifiers take a break until next year until June 2025. Belize will play away against Montserrat on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 and will then take on Central American powerhouse Panama on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the FFB Stadium. 

The top two teams in each group advance to the third round of the Concacaf Qualifiers.

Today (Saturday) in the Concacaf Qualifiers, all visiting teams reigned supreme Guatemala blanked British Virgin Islands 3-0, Suriname pounded Anguilla 4-0, Trinidad routed Bahamas 7-1, Curaçao downed Aruba 2-0. All winners played playing away games.
