Police officer remanded for alleged rape of detainee at Queen Street police station

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Constable Derwin Troy Marin, attached to Precinct 3 Police Station, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being charged with the alleged rape of a female detainee. Marin, 45, of East Canal Street, Belize City, was arraigned on Monday and will remain in custody until his bail hearing at the High Court on August 6, 2024.

The allegations stem from an incident on Friday, June 7, 2024, when a detainee reported being raped by Marin in the bathroom of the Queen Street police station cell block. According to the complainant, she had asked to smoke a cigarette, and Marin escorted her to the bathroom, where he allegedly coerced her into sexual intercourse.

During his court appearance before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola, Marin displayed a smirk when asked if he wanted to retain an attorney, eventually stating he was trying to secure one. Prosecutor and Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Chester Williams opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the offense.

The Belize Police Department (BPD) conducted both an internal and criminal investigation immediately following the complaint. Surveillance footage confirmed Marin’s presence in the bathroom with the detainee, leading to his arrest on June 9, 2024.

In a public statement, COMPOL Williams emphasized the department’s commitment to integrity and accountability. “The actions of Constable Marin are deeply troubling and unacceptable. We assure the public that such behavior will not be tolerated within our ranks,” Williams said. He commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward and encouraged others to report any misconduct.

Marin’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 6, 2024, as the investigation continues to ensure justice is served and public trust in the police department is maintained.
