Belize Tourism Board breaks barriers; Brings reef to Belizeans

Posted: Wednesday, June 12, 2024. 3:34 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: In a groundbreaking initiative timed with World Ocean Day, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) launched “No Barriers Reef” on June 8th. This innovative project uses virtual reality (VR) to allow all Belizeans to experience the wonders of the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The project was inspired by the realization that many Belizeans have never had the opportunity to witness the largest living reef in the northern hemisphere, despite it being in their own backyard. The BTB, in collaboration with The Zimmerman Agency, created a VR experience that immerses viewers in the reef’s stunning beauty.

The VR film, launched in March, has already elicited joy and pride among Belizeans who experienced the reef for the first time. The BTB plans to build on this success by creating more VR experiences, showcasing the ATM caves, the Great Blue Hole, and Maya Temple sites.

Anthony Mahler, Belize’s Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, emphasized the importance of Belize’s natural heritage and the role of the “No Barriers Reef” project in connecting Belizeans with their incredible landscapes and history. The project demonstrates the power of technology to overcome barriers and make natural wonders accessible to all.
