Cayo’s St Jude RC capture National Sports Council’s Primary Schools Football Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Cayo’s St Jude RC from Camalote won the National Sports Council’s Primary Schools Football Championship held on Thursday and Friday at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town.

J’vaughn Reid scored the only championship goal in extra time under heavy rain for St Jude to win the National Primary Schools Football Final 1-0 over Belize District’s Our Lady of Way RC from Ladyville.

Corozal’s Concepción RC took third place in a 5-4 penalty-kick shootout win over the Toledo District’s San Pedro Colombia RC after a 0-0 draw that went into extra time.

In the first round in Group A, St Jude and Concepción drew 1-1. Most Valuable Player Ethan Vargas scored for St Jude while Ishmaur Guy converted for Concepción. Then, Stann Creek’s Holy Ghost drew 0-0 with Concepción before St Jude beat Holy Ghost 1-0 on a goal by Jaylen Guzman.

St Jude qualified in first place to the semifinals ahead of Concepción.

In Group B, Our Lady of the Way edged Orange Walk’s Guinea Grass Pentecostal School 1-0  on a strike by Zayden Brown. In the second game, San Pedro Colombia defeated Guinea Grass 1-0 on Florencio Pop’s goal. The final game saw San Pedro Colombia and Our Lady of the Way play to a scoreless stalemate.

Our Lady of the Way finished group play as the first seeded team while San Pedro Colombia finished second.

In the semifinals, St Jude defeated San Pedro Colombia 1-0 on a goal by Reid to advance to the final while Our Lady of the Way downed Concepción 2-1. Kent Noralez converted a brace to lead Our Lady of the Way to victory. Ishmaur Guy scored for Concepción.

This was the final tournament for the 2023-24 school year organized by the National Sports Council of Belize which also holds basketball, volleyball, softball, and athletics championships annually.
