Wildlife Conservation Society reminds hunters Peccary season is closed

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) on Friday reminded hunters that the season for both the Collared Peccary and the White-lipped Peccary is closed from June to November as mandated by the Belize Forest Department.

“Closed hunting seasons are set up to allow game species time to reproduce so that they can continue thrive in Belize,” the WCS said on a social media post,

“It is ILLEGAL to hunt peccaries during this period.”

The WCS asked Belizeans to unite in an effort “to safeguard our wildlife and maintain the delicate balance of our ecosystems”.

“Protect wildlife populations by respecting closed seasons,” the Belize Forest Department said.

“Closed seasons allow wildlife the opportunity to reproduce, therefore, maintaining healthy wildlife populations for the future.”

The peccary is one of the popular game meats in Belize.
