Forecasters monitoring two potential tropical disturbances in Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico

Posted: Sunday, June 16, 2024. 12:04 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are keeping a close watch on two developing weather systems, one in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean and another in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. While neither system currently poses an immediate threat to Belize, their potential for development is being closely monitored.

The first system, located in the Gulf of Mexico, is a broad area of low pressure expected to form over the next few days as a system over Central America moves westward or west-northwestward. The NHC gives this system a 60% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next week. While not a threat to Belize, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of southern Mexico and Central America.

The second system, situated a few hundred miles northeast of the central Bahamas, is also anticipated to become a low-pressure area by midweek. This system has a 30% chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next week and may experience conditions conducive to development as it tracks westward or west-northwestward.

While neither system poses an immediate threat to Belize, residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared as hurricane season progresses.

Breaking Belize News will continue to monitor both systems closely and provide updates on their potential development and paths.
