Mexican Navy seizes suspected smuggled goods in Quintana Roo, near Belize border

Posted: Sunday, June 16, 2024. 6:05 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: The Mexican Navy seized two small vessels containing suspected smuggled goods in the village of Subteniente Lopez, Quintana Roo, the Navy announced today. The village is located on the Rio Hondo, the river that forms the border between Mexico and Belize, and the seizure highlights the ongoing issue of cross-border smuggling in the region.

The seizure occurred during a routine patrol by naval personnel along the Rio Hondo. Upon detecting the vessels, one of which was empty, a person aboard the other vessel jumped into the river and swam toward Belizean territory.

Naval personnel inspected the vessel, discovering 12 boxes and six packages containing various items, including sneakers, cigarettes, and backpacks, suspected to be smuggled between Mexico and Belize. The goods were turned over to the Attorney General’s Office for further investigation.
