By Horace Palacio: The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued an “Excessive Rainfall” warning for the Belize and Northern Districts, as the country grapples with persistent moist and unstable conditions.

Forecasters predict that the already saturated central and northern areas will continue to experience showers, thunderstorms, and periods of heavy rain throughout Monday and into the night. While a brief respite is expected on Tuesday, the downpours are set to intensify again by Tuesday night, particularly along the coastline.

The deluge has prompted authorities to urge residents in the affected areas to closely monitor the situation and be prepared for potential flooding. The Hydrology Unit is available at 822-0667 for further information and guidance.

The heavy rain is also impacting marine conditions, with rough seas and large easterly swells posing a risk to small craft operators. A “Small Craft Caution” advisory is in effect, advising mariners to exercise caution on the water.

While the rain may be welcome relief for some farmers battling drought conditions, the persistent downpours are raising concerns about flooding and potential damage to infrastructure.
