By Horace Palacio: A Belizean man, Alejandro Requena Junior, 45, is facing deportation from the United States after serving 15 years of a 30-year sentence for a home invasion in Lake County, Illinois.
Requena was released from prison earlier this year but was immediately placed on an immigration detainer by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). After two weeks of surveillance, ICE agents located Requena at his workplace in Villa Park, a suburb of Chicago, and took him into custody.
ICE has stated that Requena will remain in federal custody pending immigration proceedings. It is unclear when a final decision on his deportation will be made.
The case has raised concerns about the treatment of immigrants who have served time in U.S. prisons. Some advocates argue that individuals who have paid their debt to society should be allowed to remain in the country, especially if they have family ties in the U.S.
Requena’s family in Belize has expressed their disappointment and frustration with the situation. They are hoping that he will be allowed to return home soon.
Background
Requena was convicted of home invasion in 2009 and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was released in early 2024 after serving half of his sentence.
ICE has the authority to detain and deport non-citizens who have been convicted of certain crimes, even if they have served their sentences.
The case is ongoing and further updates will be provided as they become available.
