Tropical storm warning issued for Gulf of Mexico: Belize braces for more rain

Posted: Tuesday, June 18, 2024. 6:55 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: While Belize braces for continued rainfall due to a lingering low-pressure system, a new tropical threat is brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, prompting a tropical storm warning for parts of South Texas and northeastern Mexico. This system, designated Potential Tropical Cyclone One, is expected to intensify into Tropical Storm Alberto and bring heavy rain and flooding to parts of Central America, including Belize.

Although the storm’s strength may be limited due to its short time over water, the threat of significant rainfall remains high. Belize, along with other Central American countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, has already experienced heavy rain in recent days. This deluge, while welcome in some drought-stricken areas, could quickly overwhelm parched soils and lead to dangerous flooding.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize is closely monitoring the situation and advises residents to stay alert for updates and potential advisories. The storm’s trajectory suggests that Belize could experience additional rainfall throughout the week, exacerbating the already saturated conditions.

In addition to the Gulf storm, another tropical threat is emerging in the Atlantic, with a potential system forming near the Bahamas. While its development remains uncertain, it could impact the southeastern US by the end of the week.

As Belize faces a double threat from both local and regional weather systems, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for the possibility of heavy rain and flooding. Stay tuned to Breaking Belize News for the latest updates on these developing tropical systems and their potential impact on Belize.
