Belize Elite Basketball League: Benny’s Belize Hurricanes take Final Series Game 1, 88-63 over Belize City Defenders

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benny’s Belize Hurricanes take the lead in the Belize Elite Basketball League Best of 5 Game Final Series defeating the Belize City Defenders 87-63 on Friday, June 21, at 9:00 pm at the Belize City Civic Center.

Coming off the bench, Amar Ross scored 19 points, grabbed three rebounds, made two assists, and one steal to lead the ‘Canes in their quest to repeat as champions of Belize top basketball league.

Glency Lopez added 18 points, two rebounds and two assists. Marquise Cunningham contributed 13 points and seven rebounds. Victor Evans chipped in 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Sidibe Bourama was good for 12 rebounds, seven points, one steal, and two blocks.

The Defenders’ topman also came off the bench. Daniel Estes sank 19 points, grabbed six boards, made two assists, one steal and two blocks. Devin Daly netted 11 while Richard Smith III chipped in ten points, six rebounds, and two steals.

Regular season MVP Nigel Jones added nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals.

The Hurricanes shot 50 percent (33/66) with 55 percent effectives from within the arc (26/47) and 36 percent from beyond the arc (7/19). They converted 14 of 17 free throws for 82 percent.

The Defender had a low 36 shooting percentage; 47 percent from two-points territory (24-51) and from three-point land (3/24). They converted 6 of 19 free throws for a dismal 33 percent.

The Hurricanes also outperformed the Defenders in rebounds (50/38), second chance points (16/14), fast break points (17/11), and points off the bench (35/32). The Defenders had the edge in points in the paint (40/38) and points from turnovers (11/6).

The Hurricanes’ biggest lead in the game was 24 points while their biggest scoring run was 17.

The Defenders biggest lead was three points and the biggest scoring run totalled ten points.

Game 2 is set for Sunday at 3:00 pm.

Game 3 will be played on Friday, June 28 and Games 4 and 5, if necessary, are scheduled for Sunday, June 30 and Friday, July 5.

All games will be played at the Belize City Civic Center.
