Government and diaspora forge stronger ties at historic Belize Diaspora Summit

Posted: Sunday, June 23, 2024. 2:43 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: The Belize Diaspora Summit 2024, a first-of-its-kind gathering for Belizeans living abroad, concluded on Saturday with a focus on harnessing the collective power of the diaspora to drive development in both the homeland and the global Belizean community.

Held at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott from June 19-21, the summit brought together government officials, business leaders, and community members from across the diaspora to discuss opportunities for collaboration, investment, and cultural exchange.

The event featured a range of activities, including panel discussions, workshops, and networking events, all aimed at fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among Belizeans living abroad.

“This summit is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Belizean diaspora,” said Sandhya Murphy, Ambassador for Diaspora Relations. “It is a platform for us to come together and leverage our collective resources to make a positive impact on both our homeland and our communities abroad.”

One of the key themes of the summit was the importance of economic development and investment in Belize. The government showcased a number of initiatives aimed at attracting diaspora investment, including tax incentives and streamlined business registration processes.

“We recognize the significant contribution that the diaspora can make to our economy,” said Nicole Solano, CEO of the Ministry of Tourism. “We are committed to creating an environment that is conducive to investment and that supports the growth of Belizean businesses.”

The summit also highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and the preservation of Belizean heritage among the diaspora. Participants were treated to a range of cultural performances and workshops, showcasing the rich diversity of Belizean culture.

“Our culture is our identity,” said one participant. “It is important for us to maintain our connection to our roots, even as we live and work in different parts of the world.”

The Belize Diaspora Summit 2024 was a resounding success, demonstrating the strong bond between Belize and its diaspora community. The event is expected to have a lasting impact, fostering greater collaboration and investment in Belize, and strengthening the ties that bind Belizeans together, wherever they may be.
