UEFA Euro 2024 roundup: Hosts Germany, Switzerland book last-16 places after draw; Scotland out

By Aaron Humes: European Championship hosts Germany left it late to get the point they needed to top Group A ahead of a spirited Switzerland, while Hungary’s late goal boosted their chances of qualification while putting out opponents Scotland.

Per the BBC, German boss Julian Nagelsmann named the same team to start the match for the third game running, and the Swiss took advantage of heavy German legs to open the scoring through Dan Ndoye in the 28th minute.

With neither Hungary nor Scotland threatening to score in Stuttgart, Switzerland looked set for an upset until Nicolas Fullkrug hauled them back in the second minute of added time.

Minutes later, Hungary forward Kevin Csoboth sucker-punched the Scots, scoring half a minute before the end of added time. Hungary striker Barnabas Varga was “stable” in hospital after being carried off on a stretcher following a mid-air clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn that was the reason time was added to the match.

Both teams resume their campaigns on Saturday – Germany against the runner-up team in Group C, which could be any of England, Denmark, Slovenia, or possibly Serbia, while Switzerland takes on the Group B runner-up – any of Italy, Croatia or Albania as Spain are through already.

Group B’s finale kicks off on Monday night with the Spanish taking on Albania, and Italy and Croatia facing off simultaneously.
