Belize Elite Basketball League: Belize City Defenders level Final Series with 62-61 win over Benny’s Belize Hurricanes

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The  Belize City Defenders stepped their game and won Game 2 of the Belize Elite Basketball League Best Final Series 62-61 over defending champions Benny’s Belize Hurricanes at the Belize City Civic Center on  Sunday evening.

The Best of 5 Game Final Series is now level at 1-1. The ‘Canes took Game 1 87-63 on Friday, June 21.

Regular season MVP Nigel Jones led the Defenders with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Devin Daly, who was a mainstay during Game 2, netted 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made three assists and one steal.

Daniel Estes added 12 points and a block. Richard Smith III tallied nine points, nine rebounds, two assists, four blocks, and three steals.

Victor Evans sank ten points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Hurricanes. Marquise Cunningham also scored ten points, pulled four boards, and made two assists. Sidibe Bourama accounted for ten points as well, along with four steals.

Kirk Smith, Jr contributed seven points, four rebounds, two steals, one block, and two steals..

Both teams shot 35 percent, scoring 23 of 65 attempts. The Defenders were 39 percent effective from two-point territory (18/46) and 26 percent from beyond the arc (5/19). They converted 11 of 22 free throws for 50 percent.

The Hurricanes converted 45 percent from within the arc (22/48) and six percent from three-point land (1/17). They converted 14 of 22 free throws for 63 percent.

The Defenders had the edge in assists (14/10), blocks (5/1), second chance points (13/6), and fast break points (10-4).

The Hurricanes outperformed the Defenders in rebounds (48/42), steals (10/7), points off the bench (11/8), and points from turnovers (15/8).

Both teams were even in points in the paint (32/32)

The Defenders biggest lead was eight points and the biggest scoring run was five points.

The Hurricanes’ biggest lead in the game was three points while their biggest scoring run was seven points.

Game 3 will be played on Friday, June 28 and Games 4 and 5, if necessary, are scheduled for Sunday, June 30 and Friday, July 5.

All games will be played at the Belize City Civic Center.
