NGOs ‘redi’ to spark debate over Equal Opportunities Bill

Posted: Tuesday, June 25, 2024. 10:41 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: It was withdrawn by the outgoing Dean Barrow administration near the end of its term on 2020, but it appears the Equal Opportunities Bill is on its way to revival.

Belize’s church community, especially the Evangelical churches, ruthlessly opposed the Bill on the basis of promoting an advanced pro-LGBT agenda and breaking down traditional values.

This morning in Belize City the Belize Network of Non-Government Organizations (BNN) is launching a campaign declaring that ‘Belize Wi Redi’ for an effort to put human rights at the center of the national conscience.

BNN reiterates that the Bill will attack discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, race and related considerations and leveling the playing field for all without touching existing laws or trumping religious belief.

The Network cites a public opinion survey from 2022 which says 90 percent of those surveyed think it’s time for laws that protect everyone and reflects the best of Belizean society, and 2 in every 3 are more likely to support a government that introduced such legislation.
