By Horace Palacio: A Canadian couple was rescued late Saturday after becoming trapped between rising rapids in the Rio On Pools, a popular tourist destination in Belize’s Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM when the water levels unexpectedly surged, leaving the couple stranded on a rock in the middle of the river. Belize Defence Force (BDF) soldiers and emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The couple was provided with life vests, enabling them to swim to another rock closer to the riverbank. Shortly before 9 PM, rescue teams successfully reached the couple and brought them safely to shore. They are reported to be in good health.
