By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Colombia bulldozed neighbours Panama on Saturday demolishing them 5-0 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona advancing to the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 Semifinals.
Colombia got things going early when Jhon Andrés Córdoba headed the ball in from a corner kick in the 8th minute to put Colombia up 1-0.
The Colombia early goal dismantled Panama’s defensive stance forcing them to press forward. When that happened, Colombia took advantage and were merciless.
Panamanian goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera fouled Jhon Arias in the 13th minute provoking a penalty kick. James Rodríguez unleashed a powerful left-foot shot upward to the right of Mosquera, who went the other way.
Luiz Díaz scored the third in the 41st minute, pumping the ball over goalkeeper Mosquera off a pass from Rodrígiez, who was in his own half of the field.
In the second half, Colombia upped the tempo scoring two more goals. In the 70th minute, Richard Ríos caught the Panamanian defenders standing after one of their players committed a foul which would have been a sure penalty. Rios pounced on the rebound hammering through the defenders past Mosquera.
Colombia drove the final nail in Panama’s coffin in stoppage time (90’+4) when Miguel Ángel Borja converted a penalty kick after José Córdoba was cut down Daniel Muñoz in the penalty box.
Colombia will now face Uruguay, who beat Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout, in the second Semifinal at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 10.
The first Semifinal will see defending champions Argentina playing Canada on Tuesday, July 9.
