By Aaron Humes: Natives of San Jose Nuevo Palmar outside Orange Walk Town, Gustavo and Angelita “Lita” Chi, are among four persons to have died in a head-on collision along the Philip Goldson Highway earlier this morning.
Minister of Health Kevin Bernard, writing on social media, issued his deepest condolences to the Chi family, the Cantun family, and their friends and extended family in San Jose Nuevo Palmar.
The Minister described Gustavo as “a dedicated educator with big dreams,” and ‘Miss Lita’ as “a great and loyal campaigner always ready to serve her community,” mentioning he had only just seen them at the gas station two days ago.
“On behalf of my entire Orange Walk East Executive, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the love and support both Gustavo and Miss Lita gave to our community. Their contributions and presence will be deeply missed,” Minister Bernard concluded, also asking everyone to keep Jesus Chi in their prayers.
According to police reports, a grey Mitsubishi Montero, driven by 41-year-old Cecilio De Jesus Arana, was heading towards Belize City when it collided head-on with a black Pontiac Vibe traveling in the opposite direction. The impact left both vehicles with extensive front-end damage.
Cecilio De Jesus Arana, along with three occupants of the Pontiac Vibe – identified as Gustavo Chi, Angelita Chi, and an as-yet unidentified man – were pronounced dead at the scene. Jesus Chi sustained significant injuries to both knees and was also taken to the hospital.
Meanwhile, three other individuals involved in the accident sustained injuries and were transported to the Northern Regional Hospital for medical treatment. Among the injured was Police Constable Andy Garcia, who was off-duty and traveling as a passenger in the Mitsubishi. PC Garcia suffered a broken right foot and facial lacerations.
