High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim imposed three sentences of life in prison, ruling that the convict must spend at least 37 years behind bars, less time on remand of 12 years, before he is eligible for parole.
Justice Pilgrim said that he could not consider the mitigation plea that Ranguy may have been sleepwalking, as advanced by Senior Counsel Godfrey Smith, when he murdered the Skeens and Vellos.
The hearing was originally scheduled for Monday but was moved to today as technological elements needed to proceed in the new High Court building were not set up in time.
Smith told reporters that his client preferred a fixed sentence that would ensure he would be out at a definite time rather than left to the mercy of the Parole Board. A psychiatric report from British experts suggested that sleepwalking
For the family of the deceased, they are still rankled that Ranguy has not shown true remorse, but today’s result puts them closer to finding peace. They say that they feel justice is served and they are now on a journey of healing. The case is now resolved after multiple changes of judges and attorneys and various other delays.
