By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Continuing with the preparation towards their first-ever participation in the Concacaf Central American Cup, Premier League of Belize champions Port Layola will play another friendly on Saturday, this time against Guatemala First Division League’s Deportivo San Benito from the neighbouring Guatemalan Department of Petén.
The match is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday, July 20.
On Wednesday, Port bombed Guatemala Second Division League club CSD Sayaxché 4-0 at the FFB Stadium on two goals each by Latrell Middleton and new acquisition, Colombian Andrés Orozco.
Port were to have played a return match on Sunday in Sayaxché but the Petén team had other commitments. The match against San Benito will be a better test. Not only are they from Guatemala’s second tier league (Sayaxché is a third tier club), but they have also proven to be stronger in beating Verdes 3-1 in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Wednesday night.
San Benito will also be a good measuring stick for Port as they recently faced Port’s first Central American Cup opponents, Antigua GFC. The Guatemala National Football League club beat San Benito 5-2 two weeks ago in San Benito.
Port announced to their fans that a fan club bus will be leaving the Cumberbatch Field in the Port Layola area at 4:00 pm on Saturday for the FFB Stadium.
The bus ride costs $10.00 and the entrance to the game vs San Benito is also $10.
Port will make their Central American Cup debut against Guatemala’s Antigua GFC on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium. After that, Port face Honduran powerhouse, Olimpia, at the FFB Stadium at 6:00 pm on Thursday, August 8.
Port’s following two matches will be away.
On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Port will face El Salvador Aguila at Estadio Las Delicias in Santa Tecla, El Salvador, at 4:00 pm. Their final game will be against CA Independiente at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
Tickets for Port’s opening match against Antigua are available at two locations: the PLB Office at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan and the Belize District Football Association Office at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. Tickets sell for $25.00 but will cost $30.00 on game day.
