By Aaron Humes: Thursday’s Emancipation Day holiday is the official kickoff of September Celebrations festivities.
The National Celebrations Commission under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology has released the official calendar of events happening nationwide.
September 10, St George’s Caye Day, falls on a Tuesday, while Independence Day, September 21, is a Saturday and no extra day will be given for either public and bank holiday.
Key dates to remember in Belize City are these: Queen of the Bay Pageant, August 24, Civic Center; Sir Barry Bowen Belikin Bash, Marion Jones Sporting Complex, August 30-31; Carnival Mas Camp Visits September 2 – 5; Street Fete/J’ouvert/Road March September 6 – 7; Fire Engine Parade, September 9; Battle of St George’s Caye Official Ceremonies at House of Culture followed by the Citizens Parade on Regent Street to Memorial Park for the Tenth Bram on Lord Rhaburn Plaza; Tribute to Belizean Patriots, September 12 at Haulover Bridge; National School Children Rally at Civic Center, September 13; Expo Belize Marketplace at Marion Jones Sporting Complex, September 14 and 15; National Flag Raising Ceremonies at Memorial Park on September 20 and Belize City Independence Day Ceremonies, Uniform and People’s Parade and 21st Bash at BTL Digi Park.
Belmopan will host the National Independence Day Ceremonies as per usual at Independence Plaza at 10:30 a.m. on September 21.
Official Ceremonies and Parade in Orange Walk on Independence Day have been delayed to the later time of 7 p.m., though it is traditional that some of the districts hold official Ceremonies later in the day than the main ones in Belize City and Belmopan.

The theme for the September Celebrations is “A Nation Proud and Free: Belize at 43.”
