By Aaron Humes: It has been a month and five days since a State of Emergency was implemented in portions of Belize City’s Southside and the villages of Roaring Creek and Cotton Tree, Cayo District.
It was intended by the Government to halt a potential escalation in violence which saw among other events an attack on the new Roaring Creek Police Station as well as on Commissioner of Police Chester Williams’ own home while he was away in the United States.
But apart from a few shooting incidents, Williams told reporters today that so far things have quieted: “How much [murders] has been reported this month? I think what we can do is to keep the perpetrators behind bars like we are doing now.”
As reported by the Belize Crime Observatory, murders were averaging ten per month in the first six months of 2024; there have only been two – those of Andrew Muns and Clint Castillo – in Cotton Tree reported in July to date.
Meanwhile, police continue to look for certain wanted persons under the State of Emergency and are still hoping to find them. If you have any information on these persons, you may contact Crimestoppers at 922 or the nearest police station.
And, intervention and mentoring sessions take place twice a week with Nuri Muhammad, a long-time volunteer to Police meeting with youngsters to counsel them away from a life of crime.
The State of Emergency proclamation issued by the Governor-General and approved by the National Assembly will expire on September 24.
