Ex-security guard spared jail after pleading guilty to robbery at ACC compound

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Donovan George Franzua, a 49-year-old former security guard, was convicted of burglary on Tuesday but received a non-custodial sentence after showing genuine remorse and pleading guilty to the crime.

Franzua, who was employed by a security company and stationed at ACC School Compound in Belize City, changed his plea to guilty during what was supposed to be his trial. Overwhelming evidence, including video footage, showed him burglarizing the teachers staff room, stealing a JBL speaker valued at $300 and $90 in cash.

In his mitigation plea, Franzua expressed deep regret for his actions, attributing his lapse in judgment to the anniversary of his son’s passing. He acknowledged that his personal grief did not excuse his crime and apologized to the court.

The Senior Magistrate of Court #3, recognizing Franzua as a first-time offender with no prior convictions, opted for leniency. She imposed a fine of $1,500 plus a $5 court cost, considering his breach of trust and the fact that the stolen items were not recovered. Franzua has until December 1, 2024, to pay the fine or face four months in prison.

The burglary occurred between Friday, September 28, 2023, and Monday, October 2, 2023, at the ACC Teachers Staff Room on Regent Street. Principal Nelson Longworth reported the incident, prompting a police investigation that led to Franzua’s arrest.

This case underscores the balance between justice and mercy, particularly for first-time offenders showing genuine remorse.
