By Breaking Belize News Staff: Selvin Bodden, a 42-year-old resident of Cayo, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to post bail following his appearance in the Belize City Magistrate Court today on a burglary charge.
Bodden, who appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #4 at around noon, was read a single charge of burglary. Allegations state that on July 5, 2024, he entered a home on North Front Street in Belize City, as a trespasser and stole items valued at $565. The stolen items included two pairs of black tennis shoes, two blue jeans, a pair of silver bangles, Victoria Secret lotion and body wash, and two tubes of toothpaste.
Initially, Bodden pleaded guilty with an explanation, claiming he was seen on camera entering the premises but did not take anything. He stated he went to the house to visit an old friend and asserted that footage could prove he took nothing. The sitting Magistrate questioned why he pleaded guilty if he claimed he did not steal anything, leading Bodden to clarify that he entered the house but did not commit theft. Consequently, the Magistrate entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
Bodden was granted bail set at $750 plus one surety of the same amount with conditions, including not interfering with prosecution witnesses or the complainant and reporting to the San Ignacio Police Station in Cayo once a week. Bodden requested self-bail, citing that all his family lives in Cayo and Camalote, but this request was denied.
The court records revealed Bodden had outstanding fines amounting to nearly $1,000, which he could not pay, preventing him from posting bail. As a result, Bodden was remanded to Belize Central Prison. His next court date is scheduled for September 29, 2024.
Bodden has a history of legal issues, including several counts of obtaining property by deception.
