By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 3rd Annual Derrick ‘Baby Chav’ Chavarria Fundraiser Cycling Race is set for Sunday, August 25, in Cayo.

Race director Joslyn Chavarria said the fundraiser race is held to assist with his younger brother Derrick Chavarria’s education. Derrick is studying at Lees-McRae College in North Carolina in the United States with a partial scholarship but needs assistance in covering the remainder of the funds.

Derrick, also known as Baby Chav, is one of Belize’s best young cyclists and has already won gold in the Road Race at the Junior Caribbean Junior Cycling Championship in October 2021 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He represented Belize at the Under-23 Cycling World Championship Road Race on August 12 in Glasgow, Scotland, and also raced in the Intelligentsia Cup in Chicago, to name a few of the international events in which he has competed.

The 30.9-mile race starts at Macal Park in San Ignacio, Cayo District, heads to the Cristo Rey Road, comes out by Georgeville onto the George Price Highway to return to San Ignacio and finish at Macal Park. The Baby Chav race will feature four categories: Men’s Open, Men’s Junior, Women’s Open, and Gons Club. The organizers will also hold kids’ races.

Registration for the race is $25, which can be paid online. On race day, registration will be $30.00.

Chavarria said the event will be live-streamed on the Ordonez Bike Shop Facebook Page starting at 9:00 in the morning. Persons who would like more information or would like to make contributions may call 637-1552 or 671-4017 or WhatsApp United States number 1 (210) 540-3994.

Mairon Muñoz of the 501 Valvoline Cycling Team won the first edition of the grueling race in 2022, and Oscar Quiroz claimed the second in 2023.
